Despite a strange Staten Island accent, Portman excels at playing the volatile celebrity, the adult version of a too-young star who turns out sour and jaded after decades in the public eye. She fields tough press questions about the attacks, gets real with her daughter (also played by Raffey Cassidy, aka young Celeste) while trying to sneak-order wine, and generally tries to keep cool while her team buzzes around her. This second act unfolds over the course of a single day, before Celeste takes the stage. If at first her grief was appropriated for her art, this time her art has been appropriated to cause more grief. ![]() The kicker: The terrorists wore glittering masks, originally made famous in a Celeste music video. In the lead-up to her big comeback concert, the entire production is nearly thwarted by news of an attack in Croatia. He had worn dark, shimmery eye makeup-now Celeste's trademark look. ![]() When the film jumps to 2017, with Celeste played by Natalie Portman, there's an eerie corollary between her persona and the shooter. The soundtrack will feature all original songs written by Grammy-nominated artist Sia. The film spans 15 years and traces important cultural moments through the singer’s eye, starting in 1999 and ending in the present day. “Colette” will be released by Bleecker Street and 30West.Īccording to the log line: “Vox Lux” follows the rise of ‘Celeste’ from the ashes of a major national tragedy to pop superstardom. Bold had been bruised by the box office failure of the Jake Gyllenhaal film “Stronger.” Its prospects are brighter now, because it scored a domestic deal for “Colette,” a historical drama with Keira Knightley, that premiered to acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival. However, her involvement had been in question after producer Bold Films delayed shooting on the project as part of a company-wide restructuring that resulted in staff layoffs. Rooney Mara had originally been attached to the film and when she dropped out Portman was circling the project. ![]() He made his feature film directorial debut in 2015 with “The Childhood of a Leader,” a kind of portrait of a fascist as a very young man that won two awards at the Venice Film Festival. ![]() “Vox Lux” is written and directed by Brady Corbet, an accomplished actors whose credits include “Mysterious Skin” and “Funny Games. In addition, Bold Films, which is backing the project and helped develop the film, has joined forces with Andrew Lauren Productions to finance and produce the picture.
